why doesn't she care that 2/3 of the house feels the need for her to attempt to change?

She has you wrapped around her little finger. Personally, that's not the kind of relationship I would want, but she seems to enjoy it.

I don't know if it comes across as respect and love. For us on the outside, it comes across as kissing up, groveling, and buying her affection with material items.

That is the million-dollar question. It's the PERFECT question for a therapist to help her work through.

What is it about her situation that makes her SO angry and manipulative and keeps her from doing this?^^

Y'all are in a self-destructive pattern. She resents you and lashes out. You feel her anger and live to placate her. She hates the doormat side of you and behaves carelessly and disrespectfully to you. You feel guilty and try to buy her a good mood.

It will never improve on its own.

Because she rules the roost.

She has trained you and your son, through negative reinforcement, to stay out of her way and buy her stuff.

Why would she want to change that?

Because deep down she can't stand you.

She also hates the side of me that attempts to put my foot down. What does she want?

The things you buy and the trips you take. That's the good life.
