My dd (will be 2 in Sept) is ready for a bed. Is a toddler bed even worth it?? I've been thinking about it and I feel like she'll out grow it within a year, the toddler beds are cheaply made (at least at walmart) and I dont see the point in spending all that money when I can buy a twin size bed, invest in the railings & get her a step stool.

Opinions?

No need for a toddler bed. Some people use them simply because they are an inexpensive transition since they use the crib mattress. I cannot think of any other reason to use them.

I never bothered with a toddler bed with any of my children. They either went into a twin or a queen bed. They did just fine.

I agree, my kids went into the bed that they used through their teens.

Many cribs these days now can be coverted into a toddler bed pretty easily. The big plus is it's "free" as you aren't buying a new bed, and it's very low to the ground, so you dont need rails. The downside is it's still the same size as a crib so they'll outgrow it quickly.

If you don't have that, I would go right to a twin/full they'll use for the forseeable future (with rails of course) and an elaborate system of pillows in case the rails dont do the job, but that's just extremely paranoid me

I bought a convertible crib for my DD when she was born. I changes from a crib, to a toddler bed, to a full-sized bed.
I like this route, because the toddler bed layout of this particular crib is low to the ground.

Many of the kid beds at Ikea are designed so they don't roll out. They are reasonably priced too.

That's what we have too.
But we haven't changed our daughter's into a toddler bed yet, she moves too much and loves ber crib anyway, so as long as she's comfortable... (she's 2 and a half).

We went with the toddler bed for a couple of our kiddos, but only because they were given to us and we could use the same mattress and bedding that we were using in the crib.

If you are looking to buy...a twin or double bed would be the way I would go. Buy the boxspring and mattress now and put them on the floor. A 2 year old should have not problem climbing in and out of it. Get a rail for along the side and you are all set to go.

I would also suggest going with a cheaper mattress...I know there will probably be many theories on this, but your little one doesn't weigh much now and you will have to make it through the potty training span with that same mattress. I have ended up buying my kids a new mattress anyway around the 8 - 10 year old mark, so I didn't spend the big bucks on great quality until then. They used those mattresses until they left home for college.
