Want something just for laughs but teaches them about how people are different? Fannie K Stein Mad Scientist series, it is a chapter book and talks about a little girl whom just doesn't belong.
Hardy boys and Tom swift went over well with our kids at that age (more 7-8, 6 is a little young). The books are really out of date, but they still enjoyed them. Harry Potter is pretty easy to read and they liked it. The later ones get a little dark, but the first one is ok.
