Especially site/store/restaurant specific ones.

somewhere along the lines it got tacky to give cash....

I did that once to a girlfriend (she was in college and needed the money, and she got a little offended) (50.00) I sacrificed 5 ice fishing traps for that cash gift and she barely muttered a thank you ....

Oh, geezus, you don't give you S.O. cash. Or gift cards.
Huge thread on that already.

We're talking kids here.

I hate gift cards and have to remember I have them, and to use them. I then am obligated to go to the stores, and I hate shopping. I agree, cash is good, and appreciated. That way, you can buy what you want, where you want.

I know this doesn't pertain to the OP's question, but just thought I'd throw in what I do with my kids now that they are a lot older, and it's hard to find what to give them for their bdays and the holidays, especially when they each live in a room in tiny shared apartments in NYC. So, since I was paying their cellphone bills while away at college, when they graduated, I continued to pay the bill and do so as their bday and holiday gift each year. It makes it so much easier, and they really appreciate one less bill.

For people who have gift cards they will never use, there are sites online where you can "sell" those cards you don't want and "buy" ones you do. The sites usually take a small percentage, of course, but at least you have something.

I've never gotten nieces or nephews things for their birthdays. It's just not done in our family. I would think that $20-$40 would be a fine level though... or even less.
