Sorry, Kat! It was a school up north, not necessarily one in BVSD. Most of the students looked fantastic. The one without the underwear? Well, let's just say she turned a lot of heads, but not in a good way.

Man, glad i didn't go to mine. That's crazy money for a glorified dance.

Our local school makes the kids sign dress code contracts, after some bad experiences with young ladies and undergarments. One notable point: unlike some schools which have been in the news the last few years, kilts are acceptable male attire, if worn with gym shorts underneath.

Lost a friend, her husband, and best man an hour after their wedding as their limo was turning into the catering hall parking lot. The limo was T-boned by a man speeding.
L.I. Speeder Convicted in Newlyweds' Deaths - NYTimes.com

This accident was particularly horrific. The family hired a limo in order to enjoy a family wedding. A drunk driver intent on killing himself veered his vehicle across into oncoming traffic and hit the limo head on. The limo driver died, and the family's young daughter was decapitated.

One can argue that when it's your time to go, it doesn't matter if you're in a Honda or a limo.

Our local HS has Senior prom in the gym. There's a student panel which works in conjunction with a prom advisor and about 100 parent volunteers who bring the students' vision to fruition.
A theme is picked and preparations start.
Caterers are interviewed and tastings are held to determine who gets hired and the menu.
DJ is hired.
Portable industrial air conditioning is hired to cool the gym -- late June prom and 700-800 kids it is $40K well spent...the prom runs from 9 until 2 or 3...keep them comfortable and offer prize drawings and many stay.
Months of gathering props, materials, etc. are followed by set and marque building, sewing, painting.
Fortunately, there is a prom storage room with miles of different wall buntings in a rainbow of hues and such.
The Gatsby theme and the Casablanca theme were amazing, as were others, but those two appealed most to me.
Prom is big in the community and after pictures and mocktail parties, students start lining up at 7 pm in their conventional and unique conveyances. Arrival is tremendous. There are upwards of 1000 people in the bleachers lining the driveway in front of the school, spotlights, a red carpet, and jumbo screens for those who aren't close enough to watch the students emerge from horse drawn carriages, sailboats on trailers, fire engines, trolley buses, military vehicles, motorcades, antique cars, hot rods, Ferraris, campers, limos, coach buses, and my favorite: a carnival cotton candy trailer with lights flashing and the dozen or so kids inside tossed out green and gold (school colors) cotton candy to people in the bleachers. Arrival parade starts at 9 and lasts up to 2 hours.

Tickets are $125 per person
So far I've only had 1 child attend prom - a boy.
Tux was a little over $125
Corsage was $24
I own antique cars, so transport was free.

Conversely, 9th grade dance is $55 per person @ the same catering where venue junior banquet is held. (Very good food.) No limos, etc., allowed. My daughter's dress, shoes, bag, and accent jewelry was $265. Her hair and make up will run $135, mani-pedi $40. Haven't ordered the boutonniere yet. When all is said and done, we're over $500! There are moms telling me they've spent several hundred for their daughter's dresses without shoes and accessories. I don't want to think about senior prom dress shopping and cost.
