Check with your hospital and your insurance. You can rent some really nice machines for a reasonable rate. My wife started with a Medela unit the hospital rented us, then moved to the Medela InStyle when the lease on that ended. It's not as heavy-duty as the one we rented and also lacks some adjustments, but otherwise she has no complaints.
Initially, we only had the manual pump from the hospital, but it just wasn't up to the task. My wife was in excrutiating pain a couple days after getting home from the hospital, and by the time we saw a lactation consultant she was on the verge of getting a nasty case of mastitis in both breasts (per the consultant). The rental pump took care of that REAL QUICK.
I'd also recommend one of the hands-free bras in conjunction with the machine. I bought it for my wife and she bawked at first (it does look ridiculous, I give her that), but now she loves it.
my wifes insurance covered about 20 different models of pumps, she chose the philips advent dual electric pump. not being able to compare it to other pumps she like it and it does the job. as the person who sterilized most of our baby stuff i appreciate it is easy to take apart and pretty idiot proof
My wife has the Hygeia and is very happy with it. It's held up very well and they have excellent support if something happens to it. Everyone we knew that had the consumer grade Medela had it crap out after a few months, so we stayed away from that one. The Hygeia is basically the same price.
I had the Medela (pump in style, I think was the model). It as just ok. I bought mine in 2010 and about a year later it was one of the ones they recalled due to poor suction.
I had a Medela Pump In Style/ electric backpack that lasted me from 2004 - 2011 -- 3 kids and worked great the entire time. With my first two I was working full time so it was used A LOT.
I'm using the Medela Pump In Style Advanced, I love it. I crank the power all the way up and can pump 6 ozs on each breast in less than 15 minutes, whooo hooooo. Nice and roomy inside, black microfiber bag that wipes up easy. Comes with a little cooler and ice pack for moving your milk back and forth.
Have a lactation consultant help you pump the first time if you can, most pumps come with standard parts, but they are interchangeble for smaller or larger parts based on how big your boob is etc. Properly fitted pumps can really enhance the comfort you feel pumping.
I had the Ameda Purely Yours. It lasted me through two babies born five tears apart (one year of pumping each) and still works great (though I'm done having kids)
