Have you asked the parents of your kids' friends about guns in their house?

I hate to say it but none of those things are required to operate a car. Yeah, you can get fines and go to jail for misuse (just like with guns) but those things are not required. Local football coach got killed here a couple years back by an illegal alien age 17 driving a car without license, residency, insurance....no test, no nothing. Just paid a guy cash and got behind the wheel.
Did you know that at one point about 1 in 3 drivers in NJ were driving without insurance?
Much of what you just described do apply to guns. There are background checks etc. and you can get in trouble for child endangerment and a host of other issues for using guns irresponsibly, just like driving.
That's really the crux of the whole "gun argument". Just like with cars, there are lots of laws and penalties and the vast majority of the problems are caused by people breaking those rules.
You are correct, anybody with a key and a car can operate a vehicle, but they can't do so legally without a heck of a lot more effort than it takes to buy a gun, at least in GA.

Depending on how you go about it, they're about even.

That's really the whole crux of the problem. People don't follow laws.
What did the government do to curtain the enormous number of DUI related accidents and fatalities?
It was a huge success fyi.
More licensing? Nope. People still drive with no license and a host of past DUI's.
Harsher penalties for violations? yep to some extent.
Public service and prevention programs? Yep.
More enforcement? Yep.
Same things will work with guns. Don't let the politicians in the worst parts of the US that have 75% of the guns problems blame the rest of the country because they don't want to spend the prevention money on poor brown kids because the violence mainly just stays in those neighborhoods.

I didn't read all of the responses but I recently read what I thought was a good idea. Most guns are kept in bedrooms. Teach your children to never play in their friends parent's bedrooms. I think it's rude when kids go into bedrooms anyway so it's a good lesson to teach.
