Is this common?

Do most parents celebrate their child's first birthday? Would you have a big party at Chuckie Cheese?

I know I don't remember anything when I was a whopping 1 year old so guess I don't get the point of having a party. I'm thinking most parents maybe have a little cake for the birthday boy/girl so they can get a cute pic of them turning 1 with cake all over their face?

Most parents I know do have parties when their child turns 1. The parties are really family parties though, not parties focused on and centered around children's activities. For the very reason you mentioned - a 1 yr old isn't old enough to participate or remember. It's a milestone though for both the parents and the child and that requisite picture is fun to look back on.

Yes, it is more about marking the occasion than having a party the child will remember.

It's not a Chuck E. Cheese type of party. We had the extended family over and did the cake thing. It was a family celebration, and the grandparents probably had the best time of all.

So much about having kids is worry and work and sleeplessness and exhaustion. Any chance you can take to make a fun memory, you should. If you don't have kids, it may seem stupid and useless, but after having twins first and then another boy later, I felt like getting them safely to the age of 1 was a milestone AND and accomplishment.

And the pictures ARE adorable.

We did a family party at our home where we invited all of the grandparents/aunts/uncles/cousins. And we definitely took pictures of the babies with cake all over their face! The bakery even supplies a special little "smash cake" just for this purpose. Here's my kids' smash cake pics.

Chuckie Cheese type party for a one year old--no. A family party with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins--yes.

Just had our daughter's 1yr birthday party yesterday (actual birthday is this Thursday). It was just family and close friends over for a BBQ followed by some cake. It was more an excuse for the parents to hang, but the kids had a good time 'helping' her open her gifts. She was a little overwhelmed at times ('Happy Birthday' song ended in tears), but she had fun playing with the kids. Good times all around.

A first birthday is a HUGE thing with some cultures. The reason being is that not so long ago children didn't often live to their first birthday. Thus, reaching a first birthday was a big cause for celebration.
