I hate party favors, the kids love them, but generally it is *crap* stuff a kid will never play with. We started getting the kids a small toy like a hula hoop. DS went to a party where all the kids got a gift certificate to Five Below.
I can't stand goodie bags either. I usually give a helium balloon and a homemade lollipop to each kid. Matchbox cars are a good, cheap option for boys.
I saw the cutest thing on Pinterest. Someone got a box and filled it with stuffed dog toys and put a sign on it that said "Adopt a Puppy." I don't know if that would work for your party but it seems like a easy idea.
Party favors are one of the silliest things invented, IMO. You invite kids to a party where you entertain them and feed them, and then feel the need to send home cheap junk that will likely be thrown away? It never made sense to me.
That was another good thing about the kids getting older! They celebrated their birthdays with a few good friends by seeing a movie or something and having a sleepover, and NO PARTY favors!
I recently attended a wedding, and on each table were very elaborately decorated, folded containers that housed various candies. Very cute and each one lovingly handmade. But I left mine there, as did the friend I attended with, because neither one of us eats candy, and neither one of us wanted a cute, yet useless, tiny box.
Agree with those who hate party favors. The only ones that are "OK" that my kids have gotten were gift certificates to enjoy the venue we were at or tokens for the arcade at the venue, etc. A small snack is alright if you really feel the need, but any kind of toys or trinkets are a complete waste.
I am not a fan of party favors either, but I know the kids love them, Since you are having a popcorn maker, what about some cute popcorn buckets or cups that they can fill, reuse, and take with them? They will serve a purpose and become a memory.
