Has anyone ever witnessed this happening? I ask because it seems to be a bit of an issue with my paternal uncle. He hasn't said it directly of course but it's still sometimes a bit visible. My cousin has become quite a successful young doctor. He went to ivy league undergrad + ivy league medical school, just finished his residency in Emergency Medicine, making a ton of money, driving fancy cars, and is dating amazingly gorgeous women. My uncle on the other hand finished high school and has run a convenience store his whole life. Long hours, not a lot of pay besides he married my aunt when has 22. He tends to have a roving eye, which considering he's a overweight balding man means he comes off more creepy than suave. He also drinks excessively which brings out his "what I could've been" speeches. Anyone ever witnessed such a dynamic?

Never in that way...but it's not too surprising. I've seen mothers try to compete with their daughters over looks and such. They get jealous their daughter is younger than they are....it's an ugly dynamic.

I'm jealous my kids have such awesome parents. :-D

But I guess my parents were pretty darn excellent themselves.

My mom was like that. Well jealous and sabotaging over everything. On the up side I never had to spend time with her boyfriends because of her jealousy, thank god.

I'm not sure about mentally disturbed but he is certainly depressed. He has threatened suicide on a few occasions although honestly, at the risk of sounding insensitive, it comes off a more of a ploy for attention than a serious idea.

Threatening to kill yourself is a plea for attention, but one that should be looked into.

Sounds like your uncle is looking at his life and comparing it to his son's, and seeing himself on the short end of the stick. How does he treat his son?

When I told my mom that I had gotten a book deal, she barely said anything, but in the next breath she asked me if I knew any websites with free pictures of cats - because she had just written a book about her thoughts on cats, and was going to get it published soon, but she needed pictures for it. Oh, well, OK...

With a lot of love and affection. lol. Unfortunately I'm kidding. He treats his son pretty badly. He treats his wife pretty badly as well. Yelling and shouting at her in public, jokes about her weight. Yeah.... he isn't a swell guy.
