Or ask that his mother cuddle with him so he can fall asleep?

I don't know that there is or should be a set age. Different kids will have different needs.

Top many variables...is this every night or just once in awhile? What is going on in the family? Any special needs? Does the kid just need some attention?

There is simply no one answer...it's more a question of needs rather than arbitrary age.

My daughter is four and asks that I stay til she falls asleep. We have a very set bedtime and bedtime rituals. We generally read one or two books and then turn the lights out. Staying with her isn't a big deal for me since she's my only and she's asleep within 5 mins of lights out most of the time

How long is a piece of string? There is no "should" here.

I used to sleep in my mom's bed when my dad was away on business - which was a lot. One day around... Maybe the end of elementary school, I just said I didn't want to do it anymore. She was actually a little disappointed but no big deal really. We didn't cuddle for the record (never a very touchy family, not even hugs etc) but I enjoyed watching nick at nite until i fell asleep.

My husband travels alot too - and when he's gone my 4yo asks to sleep in "the big bed". I'm a SAHM, I mostly keep my husbands hours when he's here (up at 5am, bed at 10) but it's easier to just go to bed when my daughter does (730 -8pm) when he's gone.
