Depends totally on the family. My family was never very touchy-feely; in other families kids like to hug no matter what age they are because that is how it's done in the family.

I have 4 kids. Son is 33, daughter 31 and two 12 year old daughters. guess who is the most affectionate? My 33 year old 6'1" college professor son!! We only see him around every 6-9 months as he lives overseas and when we are together he plops down in my lap and makes everybody laugh. he hugs and kisses his father and all his sisters. he just a kissy huggy kind of guy. the next most affectionate kid is one of my 12 year old girls-she turns 13 in 2 weeks. Every morning she jumps in bed with me for cuddles and kisses. Next is the 31 year old daughter. Don't see her very often but when she is home she always gives me a kiss and hug on arrival and departure but not much in between. The other 12 year old girl has sensitivity issues and barely tolerates hugs but is quick with a peck on the cheek.

Every kid is different but they certainly pick up cues from how their parents interact with each other as well as with their own parents.
