I would! It's pretty crowded in places and you will have peace of mind knowing your child is right in front of you. Otherwise you have to keep a good grip. we did a NYC trip last Spring and it was great but there were times I had to hold both kids pretty tightly. They were 8 and 10.

Someone mentioned using taxi's. Be warned, our taxi driver scared the crap out of us. He played candy crush while driving at high rate of speed and sudden stops. My husband and I still talk about that to this day. lol

Just don't be too sad when it is stolen. You can't take it into most places in NYC. Just grab a cheap umbrella stroller and be prepared to buy a few more during the week.

Also in favor of the umbrella stroller: if you use the subway there are not many subway stops that are handicap accessible and there is no guarantee those elevators will be working or out of order. so you will have to be able to carry it up and down the steps and get through the turn styles. And please fold it up on the train. open strollers are so freaking annoying on the subway!

Definitely get a stroller. My first time in NYC was in December and it was super crowded. People have no respect and dart out every which way lol so stroller is probably the best option. Having a stroller might even make people a little less inclined to rush past you in a frenzy.

The upper weight limit on umbrella strollers is 35-40 lbs depending on the model. The OP's daughter already weighs 45 lbs.

THe weight limit is very important but this article says some go up to 50 lbs so if the child is 45, it may be doable (as long as the stroller isn't loaded down w/ a heavy pocketbook and other paraphenelia tourists tend to take), read the weight restrictions, maybe a backpack for the misc. stuff would work or one of those shoulder bags that are designed for the shoulder, the key is to travel light

As you say she is not a good walker that mean she used to sit in a stroller all the time. And they are pretty much for the babies and kids who cannot walk yet don't you think? well that is me. My brother always carried his kids on his shoulder cannot you?
Lol..my son would REFUSE to sit in a stroller at 5. But he also are used to walk and run. Heck, my 15 month old hates her stroller.
At 5 you are ready for kindergarten. No stroller for me either.

I took my then 6 year old to NYC last year for spring break; she walked. But my kids are pretty active and enjoy running around all day. Frequently stops, lots of opportunity to take breaks, have a snack, ect... It would have been difficult navigating the streets and subways with a stroller, imo. Plus, the restaurants are SO small. I don't know how you'd take a stroller inside honestly.

OP, you could also rent a stroller if you aren't positive you will need one:

There are umbrella strollers that are rated up to 50 lbs though, here's one:

When our kids were that age we always used an umbrella stroller. We bought a great one for about $40 that had a shoulder strap (you could hook it over your shoulder when not using it.)

The one place I would avoid is Times Square. Honestly not much to see there and hords and hords of people. I was there yesterday and it was insanity. It's hard to walk throu Times Square solo let alone with a stroller.

That said, it's easy for getting around, using on the subway, boat tours, pretty much anywhere.
