Just wondering what everyone's kids listen to. I'm at the age where I'm no longer cool, but I'm too young to responsibly reproduce yet... well, ok, maybe not but my nephew wants me to teach him guitar when I move back, and it got me thinking.
Do your kids have good taste in music or does it drive you up the wall?
When I was growing up music was hugely (possibly too much) important. I grew up in Seattle and Asheville and most of my friends were really into new alternative bands (and some rap). When I left that style was still going strong, but after moving to Mississippi it feels like everything suddenly died and was replaced by folk singers and country if you're white or dirty south hip hop if you're black (it's so black and white here ah!). I'm not sure if I just suddenly got old (which is totally cool) or if things are just that different here.

Chances are if he's back home he's into whatever is in there. I'm in Tennessee and the music is awful down here. Country or rap.
My kids are. 8 and 9. They listen to classical, milk and top 49s they hear at camp. Basically the stuff they are exposed to. I'm sure it will change in a couple years.
My 11 year old (girl) loves pop, Carrie Underwood, some R&B and hates hip hop unless it's positive. she tolerates R&B unless it's old school... She really likes funk and Motown. Oh and Pentatonix. She LOVES Pentatonix.
My 9 year old (boy) loves hip hop (at least what he gets to hear, he's not allowed to hear anything hard), rock, R&B and a few pop songs.
They both listen to parody songs off YouTube. They've even downloaded a few. They've memorized all their favorite Epic Rap Battles of History, for instance and know every song Ryan Higa ever did.

No... music trends have continued to move on and you choose to be stuck....it has nothing to do with being keel or having kids. My daughter listens to everything from Frank Sinatra forward...heavy metal, alternative, blue grass, rap, a bit of pop.....some world and beach music....but then so do her parents. We didn't stoplistening to new music simply because we aren't teent-booper/young adult.
If a song is good....it's good....it doesn't matter the date it was made or the age of the listener. Why be so close minded that you think a younger persons music will drive you up a wall? You might as well get a 'get off my lawn' sign and be done with it.
If you are looking for something you can enjoy with your kids, this is baffling fun for all. Dig in to this guy's oeuvre together, like we did on a rainy day.
I try to curate and odd really grabs his attention. Hit it out of the park with this. Boy is 9.
What you listen to isn't always what you play. My three kids are musicians. The oldest (18) plays drums, guitar and keyboard. He listens to classic rock, Pink Floyd, Rush. Contemporary favorites are Adrenalin Mob and Avenge Sevenfold. On drums. he loves hard-core heavy metal because it's a challenge to play and he loves the double bass pedal. On keyboard, he plays Styx, Lynard Skynard, Boston. He has played guitar for two years and I have literally never heard him play. He takes lessons at school and I think he hates the music selections. They are probably pop/top 40.
My daughter, 16, plays saxophone, mostly tenor and alto, always classical. She has no interest in jazz. She listens to Paramore and Maroon 5.
My younger daughter, 13, plays piano. She loves classical music, especially Chopin, but she is starting to play some rock (mostly stuff that sounds kind of classical) She listens to Marilyn Manson and Florence and the Machine.
