I am trying to decide for a piano teacher for our 7 yo son. Someone I found is asking 100 dollars a month, one lesson per week, whether the month has 3 wks or 5 wks. What bothers me is that the lesson lasts only 30 minutes and I just don't think you can learn much of anything in only 30 minutes.
I had also found another source where they sent the teacher at your home, the lesson lasted 45 minutes but they asked 50 dollars a lesson - which I find to be very pricey.
Any idea what cost per lesson I should expect for a good quality teacher that will teach for at least 45 minutes - in the Atlanta area?

In Fort Lauderdale private music lessons cost around $45-$50 per hour lesson.
Contact your local HS music teacher... they can be a wealth of info. on honor music kids looking for some extra money. My DD is taking guitar lessons and it's been inexpensive and she's learned tons.
It's cheaper to take your children to lessons, than to have somebody come to the house. In GA you can contact Music Matters, which has a good reputation.
30 minutes sounds about right for a 7 yr old though. My son didn't begin 45 minute lessons until middle school.

The length of lessons will increase with proficiency. Regular practicing between lessons is going to achieve a lot more than longer lessons.

This. You want him to enjoy and absorb it. Not dread sitting for an hour while someone tries to overload him with information he's not yet ready for and won't absorb because he's wondering exactly how much longer he's expected to sit. There's plenty of time for longer lessons, if warranted, as he gets older and more accomplished.

I think that in general half an hour for a young child is plenty. However, some kids really take to music lessons and will gladly sit for an hour. When you start a younger child it is best to start with half an hour and if they child is really enjoying it then you can expand to an hour.
My daughter is taking guitar lessons from a friend (so we're only paying $12 per half hour lesson, which is way below normal prices for the area). She's nine, and a half hour lesson is just enough to teach her something new, have her practice a few times, and give her instructions for practicing at home.

I took piano lessons as a child, for several years, and my lesson lasted at least one hour.
But if everyone agrees this is the standard now...I guess this is what I will go with.
