Do you appreciate child beauty pageants? Would you want your child in one?

What do pageants teach children?

Disgusting.

Creepy.

People of Wal-Mart comes to mind.

Pageants teach children about overbearing, wannabe parents.

I think they're awful and I wouldn't let my child be in one. I picture fat, untalented mothers living the pageantry vicariously through their daughters, who should not be concerned with the way they look at that age.

Eh, not our style.

But I think it's more the parents' attitudes towards them that can get out of control, not necessarily the pageants themselves. If a kid wants to do them for fun, and it helps build confidence - more power to them.
When it becomes a way of live and sends a family into poverty to support the hobby - it's time to re-evaluate.

I agree with this. I would be very discouraging to my daughter if she found out about them and wanted to participate. If the pageants would stay light and fun (no make up, simple hair and dresses, with a cute talent) I would stomach it and let her do 1 or 2 for fun. There is no way in hades I would let her do those over the top crazy ones though. NO WAY!

I find it odd that people spend thousands of dollars on these crazy things when the top prize is only a few hundrend bucks :/. Seems ridiculous to me!

Those glitz ones are seriously sexual abuse in the making. So gross.

All of them are weird and creepy to me. I just wouldn't let my kid do it. But I don't think it's just patents parents get overly obsessed with. I've seen it with dance, cheer, soccer, football, lacrosse, etc. Some parents are just like that and they tend to come together in higher competition levels and spend a ton of money and energy on it.

Proving their worth through there genetic offspring. Sad.

The real "prize" is a huge boost to Mommy's ego while she lives vicariously thru her daughter.
