If those parents really didn't want the child, why did they come back to pick her up? Why not just leave her there and be done with it?
The parents have to make it "look" like they are just stupid or naive. Neither is a crime. They gave it an hour and came back. Since security was involved - even passively - they will likely try elsewhere next time.
Meanwhile, if and when you see this occur, don't wait for someone else to do something. Get on the phone and call the police - not mall security, the police.
Unfortunately the camera videos are usually only stored for a short time then retaped over.
I was suprised that the police didn't think of looking at them. I was in such shock that I didn't think of it, but someone asked me if the police reveiwed the tapes and when I asked them three days later they told me no. I then asked them to look at them, they told me to call costco to see if they still had them.
By the time I got the police to agree to reveiw the tapes from Costco, I was told by Costco that the video's from that day have already been retaped over. This was approximately three days after the date of the incident.
If there is ever an incident.....It is very important to get the police to ask to see the tapes ASAP. They might not ask for them, so you might have to push for it, but ASAP because the stores tape over them so as not to have to store tons of tapes.
Tapes are only good if reveiwed in a timely fashion. Unfortunately for some other poor soul, they didn't in my case, because according to them "an actual crime did not occur" because my child was recovered and not remvoed from Costco. Therefor in their eyes my child was not abducted, becuase they would not be able to prove that the women took my child with intent. Had the women actually been able to leave Costco with my child, then it would have been concidered an abduction.
This is absolute lunacy. Basically, anyone can attempt to abduct you child, but if they can't OR don't follow through, they are protected under some notion, that you cannot prove intent! HOG WASH! Our children need to be protected better then this. Afterall, this same women probably was not her first time, and I doubt it was her last. People like this no how the system works, thats how she got out of it. Laws need to be in place to investigate any possible child abduction, to protect all of our children!
I have to admit, the CODE ADAM protected my child, and that is great. I am glad that Adam's parents lobbied for that and I understand why now, It stopped someone from getting out of the store with my child!
Good idea. I just called the police and told them what happened. The police officer sounded pretty disturbed by this as well. They said they are going to look into this and talk to mall security about the incident. Hopefully it will prevent this from happening again.
Thank the Lord for people like you, who are decent and kind. God bless you.
Well, a few weeks ago I read where someone abandoned a small child at a store. Then yesterday while doing my shopping at the local SuperTarget this happens:
Going thru the jr dept looking at t-shirts which is located at the front of the store. This little boy of about 2 comes straight towards me just walking swiftly by not paying any attention to ANYONE! He was of a certain nationality so I looked around and saw no one that "matched" this child ANYWHERE in sight. He kept on trucking almost ran into another shopper and off around the corner he was gone. Well I continue on my shopping and head on over to the electronic side of the store and look at some cd's. I stopped along the way and looked at the little girls clothes. Headed back to towards the back down the side and picked up a few things I needed. Rounded the corner to the toys and slowly went on by (I was in no big hurry so taking my time and just looking around). Got to the bedding area and started looking for something in particular. Searched for that item and then here comes this same little boy coming right at me on the very back aisle of the store. He then found the toys and went straight to one aisle. I again look around for SOMEONE that "matches" this child, don't hear anyone calling for a child................ hmmm. We are talking a good 15-20 minutes here that I've seen this child now with NO ADULT and totally by himself that is about 2 years old. I decided to go over and pick up the service phone. When the employee showed up I explained everything I had seen. He was perplexed and we could not get this kid to respond to us (we stood back a few feet asking if he was with his mommy or daddy). The guy motioned for another employee to come over and she came. Told her the same thing I'd seen. She tried to talk to him........... nothing doing. Still no signs of any parent looking for this small child. A manager soon came and he went hustling down the aisles ALL OVER that store looking for anyone that looked like they "matched" this child or was looking for a child. NOTHING!!! I went on and left to finish my shopping (still had all of my groceries to get).
When I was finishing checking out here comes this woman thru the front door of the store w/ the same little kid. She comes up to the person checking me out and asked if someone had found some keys. No one had. She looked TOTALLY LOST AND CLUELESS!!!!!!!!!! He shook his head and then I told him about what I had witnessed. He had checked them out and said all she bought were toys and the boy screamed if they got put into a bag as he wanted to hold them ALL! We believed she locked her keys in her car. I still don't get how this little 2 year old could wander around a store for a good 20 minutes and a parent not be looking for them. I told the employees that if my 9 yo was missing for more than TWO MINUTES you would hear me throughout that entire store and I would NOT need a PA system. I'm glad the kid ended up okay but he runs the chance of not meeting someone that cares if they notice him w/o a parent like that.
It's entirely possible regarding the OP (not the subsequent links and anectdotes), that the child was left there, because it's the child/neice/nephew of a mall employee. Or perhaps even that of one of the security officers. It's very possible that the reason the security officers didn't think twice about handing the kid over, was because they knew the parents. And in fact, it's possible that this child was being watched and kept safe by an entire mall's worth of security officers and cameras.
I don't really think that's the case, but it's pretty funny how people pounce on the "perpetrators" in the stories of strangers.
you did what you thought was right, and in all honesty, i probably would have called mall security too.
but now i guess we all know that (since they cant do anything) calling the cops is a better idea....
