I desire something that will allow me to designate a given area as a "safe zone" and that will trigger an alert if my child leaves this area. I tried such a device once, about 3 years ago, but it was awful--I set up the "safe" area, put the device on me, left the area--and it may have been 5-10 minutes before it went off. That's not good enough. It needs to be within 5 seconds or less, pretty much an IMMEDIATE response.

It doesn't have to be done as a "parameters/boundaries" setup, it could be that it goes off if the child wanders more than a given number of feet from the receiver (child has transmitter), so long as it allows a range of, say, 100 feet vs only 20 or so feet.

And it needs to not cost the same as the car I'm driving if I can help it.

What are some good suggestions?

That cracked me up

I'm sure there must be something OP, I can see a point in it, would be nice to know if I my kid goes beyond her boundaries but I expect she'd just lose it like she loses everything else.

Don't know anything about it other than the website.

check out devices for autism wanderers or elopers. I am sure there is something that will work.

I ended up getting a Beluvv Guardian, a "watch" which interacts with an electronic device via Bluetooth and lets you set a certain acceptable roaming distance, if they surpass this it will beep immediately.

I've done this because I've started letting our children play outdoors alone OUTSIDE the fenced-in area, whereas before they were confined to the fenced-in area. It's been fine for the most part but our 6 year old son has once or twice strayed farther than I wanted him to, basically he left the yard and was exploring down the dirt path, and if he were to wander too far that way he'd find himself on a busy type of road, about 100 yards away. As long as he doesn't go in that direction he's OK, but at his current age (6) I'm only OK with him being in our yard, which is a good ½ acre or so anyway.

I don't want to have to watch him every single second like a helicopter parent, yet I don't want him confined to the indoors at all times either. I simply wanted a setup where he could "free range style" play in our yard unsupervised but not go farther than our yard. Fencing off the entire yard would be a large undertaking--besides, as they get older and have enough judgment to not go onto the road itself, I want them to be able to explore the entire woods around our place, within reason, so long as they tell me the general area they will be in and are dependable in being where they say they'll be. That's for later though--for now, I simply wanted to expand their range beyond the fenced-in area but still have it be within the yard itself.

Looked it up, only goes to 230 feet but I suppose of course it must be limited to so close because of using bluetooth.
