The ol' nature versus nurture question. Old as time. At the moment, I believe conventional science has the answer at "it's about 50/50". Basically, you are born with certain predilections and potential, and then how you are raised can determine what you do with it. So upbringing is maybe half of the reason of how you turn out, and the rest is all you.
Their upbringing forms who they later become in a lot of ways, like ethics, beliefs, educational expectations/accomplishments, ambitions, cultural preferences, career choices, lifestyle, manners, style, who their friends are, etc.
Their personality is plays a significant role, but I think who they become as adults is largely due to their upbringing. What and who you are exposed to in your formative years has a huge impact on how you think, how you see the world, and how you see your place in it.

What about people who were exposed to drugs/alcohol prenatal? Or born with another congenital abnormality? Or the genes for mental illness? Or born in the Sudan to poor parents. Or...or...or...
Its not that I am saying we are not 50% responsible for our own place in life...but I think we are only really responsible for how we treat other people. And that is only 50/50
It certainly does. My sisters and I talk about how we turned out the ways we turned out and how our childhoods played into it.
