Food for thought. Tom Brady on youth sports:

Tom Brady opens up on youth sports today - The Boston Globe

Quote:
Amanda Visek, another professor at GW, surveyed 150 children about what makes sports fun for them. The kids listed 81 different factors that made them happy playing sports.

Winning?

It ranked 48th.

So much truth in the lines "We no longer value participation. We value excellence". Kids cannot just play for fun these days, and it's sad.

But...every kid gets a participation trophy!

Interesting article. I agree, it's sad kids can't play sport for fun much any more. And travel or elite teams are so often about the parent's financial situation rather than the child's talent.

This is why you really need to tune out the media noise. They have certain narratives they love to tell and they are often contradictory.

Old joke, and not necessarily true.

The thing is...most kids (at least mine) know when they are doing well and know when they aren't.

They want to do well in the game, they want to score a goal and they want to WIN.

Honestly once they were older than 5 neither could care about a freebie trophy/medal/certificate they want to win, they want their team to win.

Several recent threads in this forum are what prompted me to share this article.

One of those was regarding participation "trophies" and one veered off into a discussion regarding travel teams.

Seems to me that despite all the outrage regarding "everyone gets a trophy", many here posted that these so-called "trophies" were actually mementos more than awards. The kids understand this. Kids know if they are playing well and/or winning. Thing is apparently, while they care, it's not the most important thing they are getting out of it. According to them. The parents are the ones up in arms and supporting the taking away of "unearned trophies" (ie not winning). The parents are the ones creating these elite travel team and having their kids limit themselves to one sport they can excel at so they can be high school stars and potential scholarship recipients. Kids benefit from playing a variety of sports throughout the year more so than focusing on one sport. They have less chance of injury from overuse as well as simply the burnout of one sport.

He's right. I live in an area where it seems most parents brag about their child's participation in sport XYZ and how each weekend is busy doing this or that. I almost wonder at times if it's the kids wanting to be so busy...or the parents wanting to affix that little decal on the back window of their SUV.

When I played sports, it was about having fun. Nowadays it seems like it's a parents mission to get their kids into a college program via a sports scholarship.

I think gym class in school should be eliminated.
Not all kids like sports or are good in sports.

I for one hated it, and so did all three of my sons.
