Lord, you best not take them to the south! Cute kids are fair game for grandmothers everywhere! Best mind your manners!

No ill-effects, BTW. No weird diseases. (Also no curses or evil spirits - woo hoo!) Your children will take their clues from you. If you get upset about it....they will get upset about it. My parents knew it was a sign of affection for the little, blonde Norte Americano and treated it as such.
Happened to me when I was a kid and going south to. Even southern California. I was very blonde, a little chubby (the little kid kind of chubby), very fair skinned. I felt like a star.

Sounds weird to me. I don't have children but I wouldn't want strangers touching their hair.

One time I had to be firm. The woman was potentially homeless, she had the hygiene of a homeless woman. And she asked if my baby spoke Spanish. He was 4 months old, he didn't speak. And she was trying to touch on him and grab him from me. I put my foot down, and the shop keeper saw it and escorted her out.

But the people otherwise...they were pretty clean. My kids got sick from other kids and doctors offices.

Could also be that she wanted to ward off the "evil eye". Lol.

In the Mexican culture we have this thing about touching someone if you admire their looks, otherwise something bad might happen to them. El mal ojo.

Was there any actual harm done?

Thanks for all the responses and like I said, most likely I'm being too anal but again, my sons are only almost two and the other 8 months. So very young.

As the above asked, was there any harm, no. There was no harm but got me thinking about peopdiphiles and what not. Even though I know this was not anything like that, having a stranger carressing and young child's hair got me a little weirded that's all even though with good intention and all.

That's exactly what my wife said " evil eye" but I didn't think non Hispanics would understand so I said evil spirits.

We got this a lot when we lived in New Mexico. My kids were blonds and redheads. They physically stood out. It kind of freaked me out at first, but then it got to the point where it happened so often I got used to it. I think the weirdest experience for me was when my daughter was 10 days old and I took her to WalMart. I had put a blanket over her carrier. I was standing in line at the checkout and a man pulled it off. He told me he just wanted to see the baby. Oddly enough, I believe him. That's just the way the culture was there.
