When I was a small child we went to Tijuana about once a month to shop. I was a towhead and had DOZENS of Mexicans touch my hair while we were walking around and going in and out of shops. They liked my hair. It made me feel special.
It also made them knock a few pesos off the price of whatever it was my mother was bargaining for.
No ill-effects, BTW. No weird diseases. (Also no curses or evil spirits - woo hoo!) Your children will take their clues from you. If you get upset about it....they will get upset about it. My parents knew it was a sign of affection for the little, blonde Norte Americano and treated it as such.
Happened to me when I was a kid and going south to. Even southern California. I was very blonde, a little chubby (the little kid kind of chubby), very fair skinned. I felt like a star.
One time I had to be firm. The woman was potentially homeless, she had the hygiene of a homeless woman. And she asked if my baby spoke Spanish. He was 4 months old, he didn't speak. And she was trying to touch on him and grab him from me. I put my foot down, and the shop keeper saw it and escorted her out.
But the people otherwise...they were pretty clean. My kids got sick from other kids and doctors offices.
I'm not saying I'm not ok with it after the explanation. Actually, I am still not sure how I feel. Truthfully, I still feel weird. Trying to see if I'm being over cautious or what not
Thanks for all the responses and like I said, most likely I'm being too anal but again, my sons are only almost two and the other 8 months. So very young.
As the above asked, was there any harm, no. There was no harm but got me thinking about peopdiphiles and what not. Even though I know this was not anything like that, having a stranger carressing and young child's hair got me a little weirded that's all even though with good intention and all.
We got this a lot when we lived in New Mexico. My kids were blonds and redheads. They physically stood out. It kind of freaked me out at first, but then it got to the point where it happened so often I got used to it. I think the weirdest experience for me was when my daughter was 10 days old and I took her to WalMart. I had put a blanket over her carrier. I was standing in line at the checkout and a man pulled it off. He told me he just wanted to see the baby. Oddly enough, I believe him. That's just the way the culture was there.
