What age do you think a child should be cutting up his/ her own food , my 8 year old grandson doesn't seem to get the hang of how to even hold a knife , let alone cut his meat. .

I think most kids by 8 are able, and would prefer, to cut their own food.

That said, some kids may have motor issues that might delay that capability. Or they have never been shown how to handle a table knife then allowed to do it for themselves.

Most four year olds can cut up soft foods such as pancakes with a table knife. Is it possible that his parents never let him cut up his own food so he has not had a lot of practice.

It may be a problem for an eight year old to cut up something like a very thick steak unless they use a steak knife.

OP, what type of foods are difficult for your grandson to cut?

It depends on the child. They should at least be attempting cutting all foods by age 8, but some kids have delayed fine motor skills. My child wasn't proficient on thick steak or other tough items until 9, but definitely attempted on her own. Soft items usually by age 4-5.

My 14 year old nephew still has his mom cut his meat. He's a freshman in high school.

My kids are 6/7 and it's half and half. Sometimes I do it and sometimes they do it.

Yes. I know. We were floored when we heard she is still doing it. He won't even get his own ice cream but why would he if his mom will do it for him.

My 10 year old son has fine and gross motor issues. He was able to use a butter knife by 7 or so. He also can use the side of his fork. I taught him to pick up a piece of meat with his fork and take bites out of it. Maybe not the best manners but is much easier for him.

I was also able to cut my own meat around 8 years old. I didn't have any motor delays.

Totally agree. Even with motor delayed kids. By 5 ish they are cutting up pancakes. By 8 or 9 cutting softer meats and soft fruits. It might be a few more years with hard fruit or steak.

And of course, there is a range if motor delays are in play.
