When Heather Blythe found her 13-year-old son hanging from a belt in his closet, she thought he was pulling a prank. She quickly learned she was tragically wrong. Braden Erickson had apparently only intended to get a quick high in a game teens call the "choking game." Instead, he died at his Phoenix home.

Nothing to see here, move along. This was around when I was a kid, oh so many years ago now and every so often the media trots it out like it's some horrendous "new" game.

That is true, but the fact of the matter is that it is still going on. It wasn't around when I was a teen, at least not that I knew of. When my kids hit the teen years I had never heard of it until I saw a show about it. Luckily it was never an issue with my kids, but I'm sure not all parents were as fortunate. If rehashing the issue every few years can help one life be saved then I think it's worth it. If it's something that you're knowledgable about then you don't need to read it, but it shouldn't be ignored just because some are already aware.

Point is, the media puts it out like it's something new, when they should be presenting it (if they present it at all) as a recurring issue. Choking games, and autoerotic asphyxiation are not new.

I don't want to take away from the real issue here, kids safety, but I did read this linked article.

Direct quotes from it.

"At least 82 youths, ages 6 to 19, have died from the choking game from 1995 through 2007, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said in a report out Thursday that seeks to raise awareness of the issue. Most victims — 87% — were male. Nearly all were alone."

"The practice of temporarily cutting blood flow to the head itself is not new. "

It's possibe that in the past you have read other articles that claim this is a new problem, but this one obviously doesn't.

Who cares if it is old news...There are new parents that have not heard about this kind of 'game'...Whats wrong with drawing a little attention to a lethal choking game? Maybe...just maybe it might save a life...

Anybody that is stupid, dumb and pitiful enough to stick their head in a noose to "get high" should not be saved so that they can further pollute the gene pool!

We can only hope that they are not a parent. I find that some people are best ignored, this would be a perfect example.
