Other reports say that about 10% of the population are on anti-depression medications. Here is one report but there are many others. Most say that it is difficult to pinpoint the exact number and that suspect that it is much higher than 10% today.
The Rise of All-Purpose Antidepressants - Scientific American This report tells about the off-label use of these medications for many other illnesses and problems.

Have you asked your all of your relatives, who watch your children, about their specific illnesses and what medications they are taking? Your MIL & FIL? Your parents? All of your siblings & their spouses?

Have you discussed mental health issues & what medications they are taking with the parents of your children's friends? What about their school teachers? What about their Sunday school teachers? What about their coaches?

What about your friends or neighbors who may provide some emergency child care? Have you asked all of them to share their health history and list of medications?

Hmmm, if 26% of women & 15% of all men are currently on these medications. I bet that your child is already cared for or has been cared for by someone either fighting depression or has fought depression in the past.

Just a few things to think about. While you certainly must be careful about who watches your children I suspect that some people on this thread may be over reacting a bit.

Thanks germaine2626

This thread is years old, but yes, they should. No one should dictate whether or not someone else can have kids. Not everyone with depression harms their kids.

I think people who struggle with mental illness can wind up working in childcare because nobody else will hire them and/or they can't maintain a long term job doing something else.

I had a 35 year career in the medical profession with no ill effects of any kind.

Just keep that stigma alive....

This is incredible. Millions of parents have depression. Many have depression because they had children (PPD anyone?).

I would hire someone fighting depression in a heartbeat over a brittle diabetic or someone with heart issues who could pass out at any time.

Both seem to be nice, but I cannot ever see under any circumstances to hire, even for a few hours someone who takes anti depression (prozac, zoloft, celexa, ritalin, etc.) pills.

Would any of you hire someone like this to care for your child(ren) 10 years old and under?
Because they were honest and told me....Probably I wouldn't hire them....course if they'd been like most people and kept it to themselves..then probably I would have.

Yeah, honesty and the ability to be straightforward are terrible traits for a baby sitter.

Or anyone else for that matter....sure didn't work for this woman did it.
I'd bet my bottom doller that there's LOTS of babysitters on said medications who keep it to themselves.
Those are the ones who get the jobs......

What an ignorant comment. Thankfully it will not be taken seriously.

I think you'd be very surprised if you knew the mental health history of people like your doctors, people who come into your home to do repairs, teachers at your local public school, etc. Something like one out of five people will have treatment for depression or anxiety and those people are walking and living among you as though nothing is askew, just like there are people with diabetes, ulcers, cancer, and a wide variety of other maladies that you cannot see just from looking at someone.
