My kids are 10 and 14 and they'll still watch shows geared toward younger kids, like My Little Pony, the Disney movies, Barbie movies, stuff like that. But they'll also watch everything else that they're allowed to watch. My rule for them is that I have to approve R or TV-MA movies or shows, but everything else is okay with me.

Personally, I don't like the Disney shows with live actors because they mostly seem to be about spoiled teens with attitudes, and I've seen my kids get more attitude when they're watching those shows.

Yeah it's a totally different world theses days if you are even 30 ( and I am far older than that!).

I never have had anything other than OTA tv, so much of the crap I did not have to worry about. But there was still plenty of inappropriate junk that was off limits. Even the show Friends was full of material that was not kid-appropriate. My son was 14 (he is 23 now) before he had full viewing rights, but until then there were tons of shows that were simply not allowed. The Simpsons was one of the worst. God I hated that show. (Still do for that matter. ). Luckily we just never had much time for tv anyway, we were usually outside until pretty late.

My family didn't have real TV while my kids were growing up, so I have no recommendations for specific modern shows. They watched PBS from the antenna and Netflix.

They are 17 and 18 now and still watch cartoons sometimes. I know plenty of adults who watch Spongebob and such (Though I can't stand him personally.)

They filled their middle years with documentaries, reality shows about cooking, fishing, surviving in the wilderness, tech stuff, ghost hunting... stuff like that. Older family sitcoms are great for that age ... I think they were more age-appropriate and a lot less whiny back then. PG and some PG-13 movies. I tried to focus on ones that actually told a real story rather than just "bratty kids break rules and make fart jokes" types that seem so prevalent.

You might get some great options on a site called Common Sense Media.

If you start messing with this kid's tv, only allowing him to watch shows *you* think he should watch, he is going to resent you very quickly. You're not his mother.

There are plenty of 20 yr olds that watch spongebob (unfortunately).

I would be ok with letting him watch shows geared for younger kids, much less ok with shows for older. But some kids can handle it. You know him best.

Best of luck

Let him watch what ever he likes. Most of the jokes that are more adult in shows like family guy usually goes over their head. At 11 they know what they like and what they don't. There is nothing these older theamed cartoons are saying that they arent already talking to their friends about at school. Its really nothing to worry about.
