Mine go back September 8 (private school), but that is unusually late for our area. Some public schools started August 8, others August 15. Most everyone is back by the end of the month.
This August start has been pushed in the past few years. It is really unfortunate that because of the all-important testing schedule, kids are out of school during cool, foggy May and June, but back in school during our hottest months of August and September.
My kids went back to school on July 18. They had 6 weeks off for summer, which was plenty of time for a break. Nobody in our house is complaining about needing more time off for summer.

I don't object to the amount of vacation being too short; my objection is to the timing. Because of an obsession with conforming to a national test schedule, there is a push to have "summer" vacation at a set time regardless of whether or not that is in accord with the actual summer in a given location.
Anyone who is familiar with the West Coast, or Southern California in particular, knows that May and June are not summer months, and that August and September most definitely are. Our kids are being forced to take their "summer" break at a time when it's too cold for the beach or pool, and to be back in the classroom when it's 100 degrees.
Along with the start date, how are your school calendars throughout the year? When we lived in Montana I couldn't believe the amount of days kids were out of school for random nonsense. Both full days and partial days. At least two of each a month.
Here in Michigan the only random day off besides Thanksgiving, Winter and Spring breaks is Deer day. No P/T conferences. No planning days. Nothing. I prefer it that way (though I feel bad for the teachers who have to make up their coursework and regular work.). During the school year my kids are in school where they belong. Maybe that's how they can get away with later start dates.
I miss the British 5-6 week summer breaks, here in Texas it's 12 loooong weeks. We only get about 3 weeks off for the rest of the school year. It's too long for the kids to be out of school, and it's still in the upper 90s when they go back anyway.
We start back next week. I was happy until I saw my youngest has a less than stellar pick for a teacher next year
We start next Mon, 8/22. Live in suburban Houston. Kids go to public school.
Seems like the Summer has gone by quickly. I've slowly been getting them into the school time schedule and routine. Yesterday and today, they woke up with their alarms just before 7 am. My almost 6 year old is absolutely ecstatic about this "big kid" accomplishment!!....wonder how long that will last

Our kids go back on 8/22. They go to online school but the school still follows the same calendar as the other public schools.
We actually look forward to the fall because the weather cools off just enough that we can get out and do stuff. It's hard to go to the park or ride bikes when it's 105 outside.
My kids go back 6/6, I go back 8/29. The older two are pissed that I have their backpacks by the front door. Nothing personal, I just don't want anything to get lost.
