I really think it would be a very wise practice to get School Boards, Bus companies, and Parents on board with this, and make it a learning experience for the kids....

They've got to stop getting off the bus and running across the streets before they look and parents, if your at the stops, we need to get together on this and watch the kids so that they stop.

Things have thankfully started to improve in my neighborhood. They put a sidewalk in down my street, which had been an issue before. Ultimately, it was not designed to be a kid-friendly area but my area in general is just growing like crazy because it has some of the best schools in the state and is reasonably priced. When the parents were just letting their kids out to have them run across, you really had no idea what was going to happen. Obviously when the bus is stopped cross traffic will not go, but when a car is stopped and there is no sidewalk/crosswalk, no one is expecting a child to get out of the car and dart across.

I think they still need to put a sign up that says "bus stop" in the easement area and put crosswalks there to alert people. Since there are no sidewalks whatsoever on the easement side of the road, there is no need for any sort of crosswalk. Even the new bus stop on my side of the road is just in a patch of grass.

I believe it is a good precautionary practice for the bus driver and parents to start training their kids to stop and look both ways....they should work along with the bus drivers....to do so, reminding the child as he/she gets off the bus, to do so....when I follow several buses home, I am horrified at how many kids actually dart right out after getting off the bus.
I am too. Same goes for city buses! Not the same laws for them but when they are dropping off I just make the assumption that someone might dart out on front of it, even someone old enough to know better. It scares me because you just can't see if someone is walking in front of that bus and about to walk into traffic.

I would also take a step further and teach kids (as I taught my own daughter) to let the bus go on before crossing the road. You cant see around the bus so if you cross in front you cant tell if some idiot is trying to go around the bus and if you cross behind you cant tell if some idiot blew through the stop sign.

I taught her as I was taught to always expect people to have their heads up their butt.
You are so right about drivers not being able to around the bus. At the same time I have a friend who took a part time retirement job driving a school bus and I believe (I'll have to ask him) that they are trained not to leave before the kids have crossed, which is the whole intention behind the stop signs that come out from the side of the bus and the hazard lights.

I was also always taught, and taught my kid, to assume every driver on the road has (as you put it) their head up their butt!

I believe your right, b/c while following several of them home, I see that they wait until the kids are well across the street, or away from the bus. I am also seeing a whole lot of buses that stop on the same side of the road, so that's a much safer solution.
