With the exception of B-days & Christmas, my son knows that if he wants something (video games) he has to work for it. It's never too soon to teach our kids about the value of money and how to manage it.

It doesn't sound like that is what is happening in your house, though. It sounds like you have "stuff" but a lot of active parenting to go along with it! Congrats to you on finding a great balance with your kids!! There are a lot of families that don't have that balance!
We know families who give everything a child could ever want and some of these families have spoiled-rotten, ungrateful kids. Other kids from the same type of families? You wish they were your own for all the kindness, generosity of spirit, loving and delightful children that they are.

We know other families who cannot afford the best of things or activities and have found that they too have children who are rotten to the core and others who are just as kind, generous, loving & delightful to be around, too!

I think finding a good balance is key to any family and I hope that my DH & I can find the same kind of balance 5kingsinvegas describes in her family.

My children are being taught that "to whom much is given, much is expected".

They suffer the consequences of their actions and know it. If they get into trouble at school I support the teacher and his or her decision as to the discipline. I don't automatically assume my child is telling me the whole story, and I work hard to hear both sides.

I think too kids are rotten. It's our fault really. So much of it comes from our obsession with materials, constantly being envious of others materials, and futile attempts to live out the fantasy lives. I'm sure I as a parent have been a dismal failure in this area. My child has daily chores that she has to been constantly reminded of, although it is posted. Is it sometimes easier for me to just to get tired and forget myself to to once for all teach this vital lesson; everyone must pull his/her own weight, do your chores,do your share. Why should I feel guilty for not providing more and more, she has roof over head, food in fridge, clothing, access to tv, computer, bike, car (she complains if she has to walk the dog). Kids have so much, and unfortunately they want more of what we gave them...something for nothing.

Madonna only gave her kids like three presents for Christmas, because she disapproves of all that commercialism. Good for her.

Here's an article about her and Guy's family life:

If your Madonna's kid isn't everyday pretty much Christmas though? I mean imagine being her teenage daughter - like you'd have to worry about your clothes not being cool enough!

Exactly, unless she marries someone really rich and stupid, she will be nothing in life.

We might be talking about two different shows.. I thought you were referring to My Super Sweet 16 on MTV. (reason I wonder is because it's different spoiled rich kids who have these super expensive.. and ridiculous parties thrown for them.. oh and they get beamers and mercedes as presents from their parents!.. it's both girls nad boys on this show. )

Just checking to see if we were indeed talking about the same show.
