Never could I leave my baby in the car!!! I panic even thinking about it...way too many things could happen. My baby had bad reflux and could easily choke on milk if he spat up. We barely even left the house because I didn't even want to leave him alone in the back while I drove! Why risk your precious child to save some inconvenience?

I used to have nightmares that I had left my baby home and I was driving and couldn't get back to them no matter how hard I tried! My baby is like a limb on my body...I guess I'm into attached parenting.

You have indeed shared a link of a kidnapping from a person's actual home. Where presumably parents regularly leave their children out of constant eyesight while they sleep or play in another room.

And yet no one is advocating parents sleep in shifts so that one can be sitting in the baby's room, awake and focused on the child at all times, lest someone break in to kidnap them.

Why is that? After all, why risk it?
One story. Exclusive video: Car stolen with child inside outside Cleveland day care | fox8.com Fewer parameters than people are throwing out, but still. Don't be stupid.

One more. Family's Car Stolen, Child Inside: Fort Worth Police | NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. There are dozens of stories. I remember this one as it was local. Until people get it through their thick skulls...it is not safe to leave your infants/small kids in your car. It's tempting, but ask these parents if it was worth it.

Just food for thought. People sometimes think they will only be in a store for a few minutes, so they may rationalize it is OK to leave a baby/young child in the car. They get inside and then see someone they know. So at least a minute or two of conversation or more there. Then they notice long checkout lines. Compounding that is people in front that have delays due to someone in front of them having an item that needs a price check (not as common these days but still happens)or someone whose debit/credit card is not working (usually just overdrawn but they often say no way to the cashier and then it fails 2 or 3 more times...lol).

So basically Murphy's Law can easily kick in when someone leasts expects it. So it is not a good idea to go into a store and leave a baby/young child in the car IMO. Even if the child was OK when you returned to the car, it was not worth breaking into a cold sweat/anxiety when shopping was taking longer than expected IMO..

Not sure why you specifically quoted me when not one of the provided links addresses the situation I was discussing.

I never did it, not so much because the risk was large but the possible consequences were so unimaginably dire that no risk was worth even contemplating someone taking my baby in or from the car.

I wouldn't leave any child under 10 in a car alone. Even after 10 I'd use caution and common sense to deem whether it's safe to do.

A very interesting article which came out today on this subject:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/poste...=.dc41822d9053

The article argues that much of the perceived "danger" of leaving children alone for short periods of time is actually rooted in moral disapproval of a parent who would do such a thing, not in the actual risk involved.

Quote:
The unfortunate consequences of this newfound hysteria include a hypervigilant style of parenting that is probably not good for either children or parents. Children lose out on the physical and mental-health benefits of spending long hours outdoors with friends, and parents cannot give children the age-appropriate, low-risk experiences with independence and responsibility that they need to become competent adults.

I'd never do it. I was the type of mom who not only took the baby into the store, but took him OUT of the cart if I needed to walk away from the cart for a moment. Like, even five feet away. I was sure that if I even turned my back on him someone would come over and snatch him away. Part of this is that it took me many years and a lot of intervention and luck to have the one child I have, and I was not young when we finally succeeded, so perhaps he's just a little more precious to me than other people's children are to them.
