For those that don't want to click on the link, it is about how puffy coats reduce the effectiveness of car seats since you can't get the straps as tight when a child is wearing one.
We have a 3.5 year old and a 7 month old. Our older child wears a fleece jacket in the car, and we bring a warmer coat to put over it once we get to our destination if it is extra cold outside, we live in Michigan. We recently bought this Columbia one on Amazon, a pretty good price. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

My daughter does the same with my grandsons. The three-year-old wears a thick hoody in the car with a blanket over him and puts on his winter coat when he gets out. The 3-month-old has a car seat cover hand knitted by his greatgrandma.
At first I thought she wasn't dressing the oldest warm enough, but she explained why.
I used to just take the jackets off, buckle the kids in, then put the jacket on backwards over them (arms through the sleeves and such. When they were babies, I would tuck blankets over them but now they make insulated covers which are probably safer.
I do the same as carnivalgal. I warm up the car, put a fleece on my 16 month old, with his coat on backwards.
