Those graphs are a little misleading at a glance because the bars (the number of babies given each name) are different. This makes the ups and downs of Katherine look more pronounced than those of Elizabeth.

Elizabeth has dropped more from its peak, but it is quite a bit more common than Katherine. If you combine the different spellings, Elizabeth/Elisabeth was #23 in 2015, and Katherine/Catherine/Kathryn was down at #51.

Sometimes, in the oil and gas business, you run into some folks with fairly unusual names. One time I was collecting heirship data on a Harris family in Colorado County, Texas, and I had a phone conversation with a Mrs. Williams, who was a daughter of one of the Harris siblings belonging to this family group I was trying to identify.

Milton Miteybad: "Well, Mrs. Williams...I think we've covered pretty much everybody. You've told me about the following Harris heirs: Barney, Eric, Letitia, Franklin, Roscoe, Emily, Rosetta, and Herbert. That leaves just one more...this Leonard Harris. Would you know anything about Leonard Harris?"

Mrs. Williams: "Yes, indeed. Leonard was my mother. She passed away some years ago."

Milton Miteybad (pausing for a moment to let the information sink in, and attempting to compose himself at the same time): "Pardon me, Mrs. Williams...just trying to make sure I understood you...you said that "Leonard" was your mother, is that right?"

Mrs. Williams: "Yes, that's right. But nobody actually called her by her given name."

Milton Miteybad: "I see. What did she go by?"

Mrs. Williams: "Willie. She was known as Willie Harris in the community, but her given name was Leonard Harris."

Milton Miteybad: "OK. Interesting..."

I like Maria and Marie. Marie is my 10 year old's second middle name. It's my paternal grandmother's middle name.

Ethnic names that aren't popular in the states, mostly because I wouldn't want my child constantly explaining where her "weird" name comes form. (my relative's name is Ailish; very Irish but the torment she endured, oy vey...

Even if I like a common name, I won't give my children those names

During my hippie years I really wanted a boy and a girl - Indigo and Sage... glad I outgrew that LOL
What's a "stripper" name? Why does everyone have to be named some classic (read: British) name?

Look at the first names of some of the US presidents-Lyndon, Dwight, Franklin (2), Calvin (actually John Calvin), Woodrow, Grover, Millard. You will not find these names on any "top 10" or maybe even "top 100" list for their birth years.

To determine your stripper name, combine the name of your first pet with the name of the first street you ever lived on.

Teeb-and-Tob Ashland here.

Teeb and Tob were my goldfish, when I was two years old.

Yes, I named them.

Harvey 16th St? Kinda hinky!

Harvey was a cat, named for Harvey Haddix, a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
