The main thing, I think, is to recognize people who are trying to manipulate you, in order to get closer to you. So much assault is perpetrated by acquaintances, who make a move when the victim's guard is down. Self-defense is about recognizing red flags for what they are, and not allowing a bad situation to develop, in the first place.
Every single woman I know has been cat-called or groped. Every.Single.One.
And although officially the percentage of women who have been raped is about 20%, I dare say that number is much higher. Even the Department of Justice estimates that only 34.8% of sexual assault cases are reported to authorities. So if you look at the percentage of women who are sexually assaulted (that's the official, reported cases), then increase that by about 60%, you'll get a more accurate number. And, yeah, it's ridiculously high.
Some day we are going to see a conversation about how women and girls are people, and that when you sexually harass and assault them, it is not a matter of being "politically correct" that it is WRONG, evil, destructive. Instead we continue to have conversations about how to protect ourselves as if this is inevitable. I guess that for the time being it is.
