A baby girl born today in South Carolina, hours before the total solar eclipse, has been legally named Eclipse.
Eclipse Alizabeth Eubanks came into the world at 8:04 a.m. weighing 6 pounds, 3 ounces and measuring 19 inches long, Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, confirmed to ABC News.
Eclipse wouldn't be my choice, but I've heard worse. The only thing I really don't like is the spelling "Alizabeth." I suppose they didn't want her initials to be EEE for some reason?

^^This. All of it.
She could always use "Alizabeth" in later life. "Liz" is popular right now as a nickname for the regular spelling.
People do tend to name their kids for current events, or things that happened on the day they were born. Lots of kids born in December with Christmas-y names, for ex. When I had my second daughter on the 4th of July, people joked that we should have named her "Betsy Ross", "Martha Washington", etc.

Freedom? Liberty nn Libby?
My second daughter was due on December 24. If she'd been born that day, or Christmas Day, we were going to give her the middle name Noel. But she came a few days early, and so we chose something else.

Ha, Ha! We used the name we had chosen, had she been born on her due date (July 5) or any other day.
My daughter's friend was due in December; the couple was going to used Noel for a middle name. Baby came a month earlier, they used it anyway. Probably they liked it by then.
But hey, there was so much hype about this eclipse, and I saw it and it was *****AWESOME*****! I can see why a mom would want to commemorate that.

Our daughter was born on December 29th, and we named her Holly.
Why did they name her after a now discontinued Mitsubishi automobile?
