Dear CD parents,

As a devoted auntie who is not a parent, I never have any idea what to get my nephews as gifts. I prefer not to ask my sister because then she and BIL know exactly what they will get, and because she usually asks me to get them clothes, and when you're a kid, clothes are a really lame Christmas gift. I have asked you for gift ideas for the little nephew twice years ago and I took your advice. Both he and my older nephew are still playing with the toys I bought him!

So I come to you for your sage advice again. Some info: my older nephew, age 11, is a basketball freak. He plays about 3 hours a day after school. The younger nephew, age 4, is very quiet and shy. He plays video games on the iPad and E-box a lot. The brothers get along great and play with each other, even though they are six years apart. I do know when I got the boys a huge selection of candy for the holidays, that was the wrong gift. Mom got really mad at me, although the kids liked it. Whoops! Thanks for any suggestions.

I like those ideas. The older one has torn up two hoops already.

I loved giving Leap Frog gifts....They grow with the child and are very educational yet fun.

A good assortment of classic picture books for the four-year-old would help counterbalance all those video games nicely.

The right book or books for the eleven year old are not a bad idea, either. Perhaps kids' biographies of his favorite athletes might be a hit.

It seems kids these days are totally absorbed in video games, often to the exclusion of doing anything else. I'd get them a science kit or some books.

I love the idea of science kits. Look into Koala Crates, Kiwi Crates, and Tinker Crates. They are for different age groups, and the children receive a box each month. My grandson loved it.

For the 11-year old: a drone. They are all the rage. You will be the cool uncle.

For the 4-year old: Transformers

You're welcome!

Tickets to a professional sports game
Tickets to a kids event like Sesame Street live

Kids get enough junk, give them experiences

One issue with experiences and kits: if the parents choose video games because doing experiments etc. is too much work, the stuff might seem like a burden. Depending on the kids' personality type, it could be like pulling teeth to get them to do something.

In that case, a combo gift of a science kit + "parents night out" check so that a babysitter can do the craft with the kids could make you a family favorite forever.

Basketball camp for spring break could be fun but if the parents have plans for a vacation that would be a wash.
