CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- A gust of wind blew a 2-year-old in a stroller into Lake Michigan, where the boy remained submerged for at least 15 minutes before being pulled out unconscious but alive.

The child's grandfather, who had been pushing the stroller on the lakeside Friday afternoon, jumped into the harbor to try to save the boy, the Chicago Fire Department said.

Witnesses said the frantic grandfather struggled in the frigid water, just off a 70-foot long pier, pointing a few feet away and shouting in broken English, "Child! Child!"

What a terrible thing to happen. Being a grandfather myself, I know the

gentleman is just devistated about this horrible accident.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family and especially this little boy.

I used to teach emergency medicine. There is a principle called "no dead til warm dead". People have survived long term cold water immersion. I don't know the record, but I know of at least two that survived going through the ice and being submerged more than 1/2 hour. No brain damage in either case.
