I have been working on a few family vacations for my husband, me and our tweens (early summer, late summer and spring break). We have been to many places....

I am curious what was your best family (with kids) vacation?

If you asked my kids they'd say NYC. Though they're pretty excited about Costa Rica later this year.

The Bar M Ranch in eastern Oregon. One week of horseback riding, picnic's, hiking and swimming in the hot springs pool. No phones or television, just quality time with my family. One of my fondest memories.

It wasn't so much the location, but the people. We'd have an extended family vacation (family was extended, not the vacation). We'd book something like 15-20 adjacent rooms for a total of about 40-50 family members. It didn't matter where we stayed. Honestly, some of the places were a bit of a dump looking back at it - but the times we had were so great.

There was always something to do with that many people around. If some people wanted to just bum around the shoot the breeze on the porch/patio - they could do that. Some might go to the pool. We'd rent a few boats and spend the day on the water. Maybe play a few rounds of mini-golf, river rafting - walk around the town - have full-on family softball games.

We managed to keep it going for about 12 years or so. We changed the venues only a few times. But time marches on. My fondness memories of family vacations were those.

My favorite so far was probably our California vacation. We flew into San Francisco, spent about 5 days there, then drive through Big Sur and down to Laguna, where we visited with my inlaws and explored that area a bit for another 5 days.

I took my son to London about a year ago, which was also awesome, but it was just the two of us, so I hesitate to call it a family vacation.

I also loved Washington DC, but I think the kids were less impressed. I’m a big history and museum buff, so it was right up my alley. I’ll be up there next month for a conference, and I think that will be better without the kids wanting to know when we could be done, lol.

We have family in Connecticut, so we are there every year or two. Last year, we went in the fall and went to the Big E, which was cool. Hadn’t done that in about 10 years.

This summer, we are going to Nashville, Birmingham, and Tallahassee on our 10-day trip. And next spring, we hope to do Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and parts of Utah. We had planned that for last year, but my daughter had some health problems that made it impossible.

We’ve done Disney lots of times and we’ve loved it, but I think for pre-teens, most of the magic is gone and they’d rather explore something new. Also, you need a vacation to recuperate from a Disney vacation, lol. But if they’ve never been, that’s a good place to visit before they’re adults.

Padre island with the best boogie boarding I’ve ever seen, miles of beaches, and activities for the kids.

My daughter loved our trip to NYC a couple summers ago. My son likes going to the beach but also enjoys Disney World (we've been twice).
