Says the mother. The doctor(s) did not pinpoint that to be the cause.
I wonder why the mom claimed it caused the problem, then. It seems the girl must have had an open sore or wound already in her foot, for it to become infected.
Per the article: Doctors think Sienna might have contracted what can be a deadly bacteria through a cut, graze or bite on her foot, allowing it to enter her body.
I think this is a far more likely scenario. I grew up in a beach community, we kids never wore shoes over summer break. My feet were constantly scratched up, etc. Couple of times I wound up with an infected toe or spot on my foot.

I'm wondering if they bought the shoes, and then the little girl continued to wear without socks, and might've gotten blisters. And heck, she could've picked up athlete's foot, which could've caused the sepsis.
Sepsis is a reaction to infection. Not the infection itself.
Shoe stores used to prohibit trying on shoes without sicks on. Many of them had cheap nylon socks they wold just give you if you were not wearing socks. They only gave you one though, so you have to go to two different stores to get a pair.
Another fear-mongering article. If true, it's probably the first time in history that someone got a "life-threatening infection" from trying on shoes. People buy shoes which other people have tried on, and then wear them without socks, all the time.

Heh. I buy my shoes from Salvation army. No way am I going to pay $200 for a pair of dress shoes. $14 is bad enough.
