Improved water efficiency not only reduces water bills, but also energy expenses - consider that water heating can represent a quarter of the energy consumed in a household. You can conserve water without sacrificing convenience by fixing leaky toilets, installing low-flow showerheads, and collecting rainwater for irrigation. In particular, toilets can account for almost a third of indoor water consumption in an average home.
All shower-heads now come with the low flow restrictions. So you really have little choice there. You used to be able to pop those restrictors out with a screwdriver so ou could have a decent shower. Now you have to use a drill to get rid of them.
We had a toilet stick. It was in a rarely used bathroom. We did not know it was stuck. Our water bill comes every two months. When we got a bill for $500 we searched until we found the stuck toilet. Now we are really good about checking them all regularly.
We pump thousands of gallons out of the sumps in our basement every week. Seems like that was could be stored and used to flush toilets. It is very clean.
Where w live there is little point in saving rainwater for irrigation purposes. It will rain again many times before you have any use for irrigation water. You would need to store it for months and months and it would turn all green and icky and stink and get full of mosquito larva.
Water heating definitely represents a quarter of our energy costs in the winter. We heat our house with hot water.
