Second, I think you should avoid what's "fashionable." Get him something you think is good to own, or something you want to introduce him to.
Third, I think the idea of giving cash is appalling.
I have to agree with M43 on this. The time to cultivate those interests is when they are younger, imo. With my cousins' children, I get the younger ones things that I think they would enjoy based on their personality and interests. My goal is to expand their world.
One cousin's son got art supplies and projects because that's what he enjoyed and the other got books I had selected based on my research and knowledge of him. His mother used to tell me how he'd take whatever I got him and wouldn't sleep until he finished it. Those boys are just amazing.
But now that they're older they get a nice-sized giftcard to the Barnes & Noble. I only pick out things for the little ones who are still forming their interests.

If the kid is saving up for something he wants, I think cash is great. I think it is especially great if the gift giver lives too far away to know what the kid likes or needs. Books are great gifts but you need to know what would interest the kid.
You could ask the kid what he wants. That’s how we buy our grands’ gifts. They know this and can readily tell us. Their parents make sure their requests aren’t impractical or wildly expensive.
OP could also ask his mom for suggestions.
Kids absolutely love getting cash and choosing what to spend their money on.
A gift card is the norm nowadays. Most kids have everything they want, so trying to guess what they are interested in is almost impossible. You could ask his parents what he would like. We have a nephew and his mom just tells us something that he has been wanting for a birthday or Christmas and we buy that.
He probably wants a drone, or something XBox related, or maybe a gift card for Itunes.
