Two reasons:

1. Some people are ignorant enough to believe the seven year nonsense.

2. Some people lie to their kids because they find it easier than having a factual conversation.

It's the same reason they tell kids their face will get stuck that way when they make faces. To stop them from doing it.

I'm sure I took that seriously when I was six but by the time I was 8 i thought it was a joke. Does anyone really believe that? I don't remember any adults telling me that, just other kids. Right along with watermelon seed lore.

I clicked on this link because just today I found gum under a table at work and was thinking about the swallowing it and carrying it around for 7 years. Funny coincidence.

Parents tell their kids that because they believe it's true.

I can attest to the fact that gum moves through the digestive tract and comes out the other end.

When my oldest was 3ish, my husband would bring home a pack of gum, and we'd let him have 2 or 3 pieces. He always swallowed the gum, and the evidence was in the toilet.

Also, one time my youngest swallowed a dime. I didn't even know it, until I was changing his diaper.

Better than what we were told happened to watermelon seeds

We never took that stuff seriously as kids. Maybe slow kids do.

Same as why moms used to tell their kids their finger would get stuck or lost in their nose when they were picking.

Or why Moms told kids that if they made faces they would get stuck like that.
