If true, would there really be any reason to cancel school for kids this year?
Well yeah, if you read the article. “We know from pandemic research that closing schools can be effective in slowing down transmission because children are often a driver of infection. They spread it to parents, relatives and the wider community,” said Caitlin Rivers, an epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security."
From what I've read, kids are likely to have much milder symptoms but still be able to infect others.
Preventing large gatherings is supposed to be the best way to slow the spread of the virus, and school is a daily large gathering of people who may not have developed the best hygiene habits yet, so it makes sense to cancel school in affected areas.
Even if they were immune, you dont have to be infected to spread it. Just have it on your body/clothes/bookbag. Im not a fan of cancelling school but i also dont want to spread or catch the virus
As far as I know, no one under the age of 9 has died from COVID-19, which is MUCH different from the influenza statistics. It seems to completely spare kids, and be much less dangerous for young people in general (compared to the common flu).
Schools should be closed to avoid transmission to parents, grandparents, teachers, and administrators. Even though my kindergarteners are diligent about washing their hands and even count to 20 seconds now, there's no way I'm going to be able to keep their hands away from their faces/mouths/high-touch areas, etc.
So that politicians and others can appear to be "doing something."
No. You cancel school so kids will not pass it around and on to their families. You care about this because too many cases of covid-19 can overwhelm hospitals.
Seattle schools have been closed for a 2 week duration.
