The identified primary pathway for COVID-19 infection is via the eyes, nose, or mouth from airborne particles expelled by nearby infectious carriers. Secondary pathways (touching a surface with deposited viruses, and then touching your eyes/nose/mouth) have not been confirmed, but are thought to be possible/likely. It is unknown whether eating food with viruses deposited on the surface (by an infected food service worker) can cause infection.
Because of this, local governments are allowing outdoor activities with the caveat that people remain at least 6' apart. They are also allowing restaurants to operate with take-out or delivery only options.
Out of an abundance of caution, and because children are believed to often be asymptomatic carriers, some local governments are recommending people avoid playgrounds. Curious how parents are handling this.
Our county closed our playgrounds on Friday. My kids go in our backyard if they want to get some fresh air. I also found some workout videos just for kids so my kids did that for PE today.
My kids have not left our house in at least 10 days, but mine are older so it's a little easier.
We are fortunately enough to live in the suburbs and to have a large yard with our own swingset/slide/playground and various other activities. We ride bikes in the street, and have gone for hikes into the nearby woods. Plenty of things to do without getting around other people or possibly contaminated surfaces. With weather getting nicer, I just send them out to the yard. They know they can't play with other neighborhood kids for a while.
I really feel for people who live in the city or in a condo with kids.
All the parks and playgrounds are closed until further notice. If, where you live, you have the option of taking your kids to the playground now, take advantage of it.
"Studies suggest that coronaviruses (including preliminary information on the COVID-19 virus) may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (e.g. type of surface, temperature or humidity of the environment)."
