With distance learning due to COVID this fall, we want to invest in computers for our two kids (age 5 and 7). Can anyone recommend good laptop computers for kids?
I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad S340 earlier this year and I was so glad I did! We had just bought a really good desktop, so I went a little lower end with the laptop. It's been great for everything though, and I highly recommend it.
ETA: Check with your school district before making any purchases. In our school the kids each have a chromebook for in-school use. They don't take them home normally, but under these circumstances they sent them home for kids that needed them. Also - everyone I know with an iPad had problems with compatibility so I wouldn't go that way.
A desktop is generally cheaper and is easier to upgrade. i built my own pc when i was very young.
i can't really recommend getting a laptop for kids over a desktop. once they're sophomores then it makes sense because it can be used to take notes more efficiently.
1. We are checking with the district. Supposedly, they're distributing laptops but we may not hear until right before school starts (late next week). We're holding on purchasing for now
2. We need a laptop because we're having our kids in after school care (will be full day). It is open while the schools are not. It is possible that they'll need to work from multiple locations.
3. Any recommendations on headsets? We may have to buy this even if we get a laptop from the district (again, waiting to hear)

I recommend doing all the research and picking the kind you will buy if you end up needing one, so that you can order it asap. My friend tried to get a laptop in April and it took a really long time to get one because they were sold out everywhere. I bought my son a cheap headset with a mic for gaming and he loves it! It works out much better when doing any conferencing because the mic on the computer picks up a lot of noise. You can go bluetooth or get better quality, but this cheap set is working out really well for us for the last few months. Just make sure whatever you get is compatible with whatever system you use.
For virtual schooling I definitely recommend a laptop over desktop. My son was able to have Zoom meetings in the car and work outside in nice weather. He came to work with me too and was able to get his work done. For myself I want a top of the line desktop with a big monitor hooked up to the printer/scanner and loud speakers. But it would have been awful if that's the only thing we had for school during all of this.

A laptop is much easier to move around. Our son can have his school meetings in the dining room, kitchen living room or even outside. It's just more convenient than being stuck in one location.
I would recommend a laptop. That is what we use for our son.
To the OP, I would just get a nice set of over ear headphone that have soft pads to go on the ears. Our son uses in ear, ear buds but he's 10. When he was younger we used some over ear headphones that we bought from Target. They were around $20.
Yea, a laptop is a no brainer for kids. I'd probably get a lower end computer that is durable for a children that age. A macbook air fits the bill. ThinkPads are some of the most durable computers, but they are more business laptops.
I got a chromebook (simple version of laptop) for my kid when her school started closing in March. I got it at Bestbuy on sale for $200 (including tax, free shipping). It has a good size screen (17"). It's more than double the price since then. She's very happy with it. She has used it for school, for reading ebooks from the library, and for watching Netflix/Youtube/Disney plus.

You may want to check with your school district. Ours has deals going on right now with Dell.
