Hello, my wife and I want to have our 12-years old newphew come to stay with us for three years. We will take care him as our own child. His parents will have to move out of city for short period of time due to job related and he does not want to go. Based on this situation, what legal requirement do I need to pursue? Do I need to complete any free form and get notatized or the power of attorney for minor or do I have to get the lawyer involved? I am avoiding to spend any cost if possible. Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

You could fill out these forms and do it yourself:

https://powerofattorney.com/north-ca...ina-adobe-pdf/

https://eforms.com/power-of-attorney...r-of-attorney/

But if were me, I'd definitely talk to an attorney and make sure its done right.

Common sense also suggests that you have certified copies of these placed on-file at his school and with your family doctor.

Maybe I'm paranoid (and I dont have kids), but in a million years, I cant see doing this without a lawyer.

And keep that attorney name on file, because I bet he's gonna need one in the future too.

I would think you'd need some sort of guardianship, but again, that's something you need to discuss with an attorney.

A 12 year old already running the "show".

I'd definitely have an attorney looking over my shoulder in that position.

Yeah, unless there is some severe dysfunction within the kids family, this is not a good idea. I would definitely use an attorney to get all ducks in a row.
