I have seen this often...

A guy is really not much of a catch at all-not good looking, or successful, smart, or even very interesting...yet their Mom always seems to think they are the most handsome guy around...

Why do Mom's overestimate their sons desirability? Father's seem a bit more realistic IMHO.

If you are a Mom do you do this? If so why?

What do you expect mother's to say to their sons?

"Son, you look like a troll, and you're unemployed. Don't ever expect anyone to love you, because they won't"???????

No..that is just harsh and cruel coming from anyone let alone a person's Mother.

I have just noticed Fathers seem a bit more blunt. They don't seem to sugarcoat....Anyone agree with this?

Maybe Mother's should be more honest then they typically are- but less blunt than their husbands?

Dad's fully support their daughters, just as mother's support their sons.

I know I do.

Why do Mother's support their sons while Fathers support their Daughters..Seems backwards to me.

I know I do.

Not all of them do, as I know from experience with my father.

There are still old-fashioned dads, who either consciously or unconsciously, give more importance to their sons and sons' potential careers, than their daughters. There's still that "boys are important, girls--not so much" mentality around. Even in this day and age.

Why do you ask, OP? Do you feel your mother overestimates your desirability?

Or maybe let things be as they are.

I myself don't have a one size fits all answer as to why Mothers tend to play up their son's (and even daughter's) positive traits while Fathers tend to be more matter of fact. My guess is that in those types of families, it has to do more with the Father (assuming he is a responsible father) taking on the role of teaching the child(ren) about the practical aspects of life and being a little more prepared for the disappointments it may bring while the mother is meant to be the more uplifting person. However, that depends on the family. Mothers can be blunt, too and "tell it like it is".
