Since you are in Chicagoland, have you taken an expedition into the city for any activities with him there? When our kids were small sometimes they just enjoyed riding the subway (el), looking out the window, watching the people in the car and talking about them. Plenty of observation decks to visit in Chicago where a kid could look out over the city. And certainly plenty of food a kid could love all over the place. The chicago Children's Museum downtown might be good. Or the inside of the submarine at the Museum of Science and Industry. Our kids loved that one.

On the homefront I think almost every kid likes to help Mom or Dad cook. One evening let him help you plan a meal, go shopping for the ingredients, and let him help cook it. If you are handy around the house let him help you fix something. Obviously, make his part simple and safe. Boys like helping Dad do things. Mostly, you can start letting him help you with whatever you are interested in (age appropriately). The main thing is he wants to be with you. Don't forget that this is what comes first. The activity he does with you is secondary.

My son told me that he wanted to be like Tony Hawk when he grows up. So last summer, I gave this skateboard to him and encouraged him to practice and ride more.
