yes, it's very common. And it's no different than an adult who plays golf watching the pro tour - they are watching people do an activity that they could be doing themselves but they enjoy seeing people who are more skilled perform the activity. Sometimes because they may learn something, sometimes because they just enjoy watching someone else perform the action.

And depending on the game, perhaps your stepson is watching my son play because along with watching other people, my kiddo also uploads his own game play for others to watch.

Why can't people play sports? They can go shoot baskets at the local park or even join a rec league to play soccer, baseball, basketball, etc. And golf doesn't even require you to find someone else to play with, just go on down to the driving range and hit a bucket of balls.

Some of the most famous people in the world today among the young generations are famous because they created videos showing them playing video games (PewDiePie for instance). I first came across this phenomenon maybe 7 or 8 years ago (possibly more), so it's been around for a long time now. For anyone under 30 this is normal. In fact, you might be odder as a kid today if you don't know about this.

Last night I tuned in to a couple of young sports you-tubers doing a NY Football Giants video of the 'Madden Game'.
Being an avid football fan, and having often heard their commentary in season, I was curious... and proceeded to watch in amazement as they live streamed the two of them competing in a video game for all to enjoy!
Talk about weird, it sure was.
There were 19 others online, so I'd be surprised if they do it again... but who knows.
I sure won't.
