Malibu, Calif. — A California girl was blinded and scarred by an allergic reaction to Children's Motrin and the company "purposefully and callously" hid from federal regulators medical reports on the dangers of ibuprofen, a lawyer for the girl's family said Tuesday.
"Sabrina went blind, needlessly blind" as a result of a rare allergic reaction to Motrin's active ingredient, ibuprofen, Daniel Balaban told the Malibu jury in opening arguments of the product-liability lawsuit.
That's very sad but a "rare allergic reaction" could happen with any substance. It could happen with acetaminophen. How can anyone know that they're allergic until they have that first reaction?
These kinds of lawsuits really irritate me. Sometimes, an accident, though tragic, is just an accident.

I agree, how is it the fault of anyone--it isn't like they purposely put something in there to blind the child. It is tragic but certainly not lawsuit worthy.
Drug companies hide medical reports and studies from regulators??? That is a shocker.
It is tragic this child was hurt, but like the other posters said, it was an allergic reaction and there was no way to know about the allergy without an initial exposure. Whether the drug company hid anything or not, it would not have prevented the reaction.
I totally agree. If she had the same reaction from a yet undiscovered allergy to eggs, they'd probably try to trace where the egg was grown and then sue a chain of entities. It is tragic for a parent to discover his or her child's allergy this way and with such irreversible consequences, but that is just the nature of allergies. You don't know you have one until a reaction presents itself.
You are correct, accidental exposure or exposure in a controlled environment (allergy testing) is how one finds out about allergies. How could anyone havee predicted this little girl would have such an advrese response??

While not a pleasant situation, it's not the company's fault. Children's Motrin has warnings all over it.
