*I* don't even have a cell phone. I am not going to be saddle my kids with that crutch.
Back before cell phones, people had to responsibly manage their time. Instead of "calling to say you're late", you would reasonable prepare yourself to minimize the chances of being late. Instead of arranging things ad hoc, you would plan ahead, organize the time and people, and meet at a predetermined place with a backup in case something with wrong. Instead of calling to get help in an emergency, you knew how to change your own damn tire and perform some basic first aid.
Too many people today are utterly helpless without their electronic leash.
Mine got cell phones when they were in high school and began doing more thing with new friends and going places without me, it gave us all just a bit more freedom than we otherwise could have had. My son didn't even use very often the first year. I would have required them to have one once they began driving regardless. It's pointless to compare what we do today with what our parents or grandparents did or didn't do.
