My grandfather was one of 13... My great grandmother was pregnant for 16 years straight... I couldn't do it... I cannot imagine 20!
Personally, I only have two because of a genetic disease my kids have a 25% chance of getting... it would mean they would be very sick and only live to about 30.... I am VERY LUCKY I have two HEALTHY kids and I didn't know about this gene until I has prego with my second... we decided it would be best to stop at two...no sense risking it. (I started out wanting four)
my grandfather is one of 14 and my grandmother is one of 10.
I noticed that in my family, the older generation had more kids, 8 is the amount my grandmother had, and 11 was the amount of kids my great-grandmother had, my mom was born in 1967 so she was 1 of 8 kids that was during the baby boom generation, and I was one of 2 kids, and so were my other cousins, a lot of them only had one sibling or were only children. And now a lot of them are getting married and having 3 or 4 kids now. Interesting, huh? I noticed that with some of my friends too. And now I'm pregnant and me and my husband plan on having 3 or 4 kids too. It seems like the younger generation of kids and Americans want bigger families now.
Everyone has to make their own decisions, but it is a generally accepted fact that over-population is killing the planet. I don't care if the white-middle-class population is declining in leaps and bounds, the third-world is more than making up for it and the resources of this planet can only take so much.
That having been said, I personally think that having one child is the best compromise. It allows the population to grow at a slower rate, allows people to realize their "parenting" needs/desires (whatever that is), and also provides the greatest advantage to the child who does not have to share resources with others allowing them the best opportunity to learn and grow as individuals.
Personally, I see no advantage in having a passel of children, but obviously everybody's interpretation of this will be different. I cannot say that there is any right or wrong, but I do think that people should look beyond their own selfish wants when considering how big their family should be.

lucky for me i am 1 of 1.
Me too! Rock on. No having to deal with other people's DRAMA that affect my life in a negative way. No arguing with brothers and sisters about who gets the inheritance (if any).
Besides it has been proven (scientifically, statistically, anecdotally) that only children are more intelligent, more mature and better adjusted than children from multiple-child families. *And* we generally know how to entertain ourselves and enjoy being alone!
For me it be at least 5. We both love children greatly.
